Most recent figures from 2013 indicate an estimated 21% of wines from Basilicata are produced according to EU DOP Quality standards. The region produces 5 DOP wines of which there is 1 DOCG and 4 DOC wines. They also produce 1 IGP wines accounting for 15.7% of production. Table wines account for 63% of output.
As always, a number of the regions native grape varieties are used only for blending purposes. That said, we’ve listed those grapes which we understand might be available as mono-varietals or which are important blenders. Naturally as we make our own discovery we’ll update these lists.
AGLIANICO*
This grape is a bloom dusted, midnight blue/black, beauty. If you’re looking for 100% AGLIANICO varietals then for sure you’ll find them under Aglianico del Vulture DOC/DOCG. Truly ageworthy.
