A week on from #VINITALY2016, we’re here musin’ and a couple of thoughts spring to mind that we’d like to share.

Kinda like an ‘open letter’…

In short #VINITALY2016 should be applauded.

On it’s 50th anniversary, it has made significant strides towards securing its future growth and development. As one of the worlds most important international wine events in one of the worlds most important wine producing countries, Italy, these changes may not be immediately visible. But remember you plant and build from the ground up. No doubt many of the innovations introduced for 2016 will surely bear future fruit.

For every Italian winemaker, whatever is presented to the outside world MUST envelope their ampelographic and oenological diversity. Italy is a veritable ocean of grape diversity and wine-making talent. To not harness this potential, to not open this discussion, would be to bolt the cellar door closed.

Pre & Post Show, all the indications are that Stevie Kim, Vinitaly International MD, Ian D’Agata, Vinitaly Scientific Director and their dedicated Vinitaly team members, have their fingers on the developmental pulse.

Vinitaly is all about scale.
It’s massive.

And it’s great that it provides access to the complete spectrum of Italy’s wine-making genius. Yet this is where it encounters it’s principal and core difficulty. How do you manage the thousands of exhibitors and visitors that swarm to this veritable ferminating tank of amazingness? How do you satisfy all their needs?

From the exibitors perspective, this show is about business. It has to be. In all truth, Vinitaly’s future success and growth must be built on the strongest possible ‘Business-to-Business’ model.

Slogging away in the vineyard and cellar from one end of the year to the next, whether they be small or large scale makers, every artisan needs these few days face-to-face with existing and potential new business partners and promoters. That the visitors continue to be a mixture of professional and non-professional sippers, actually doesn’t serve to fulfill anyone’s aspirations in attending.

In the heat of debate, while there may be a tendency for some to single out certain stakeholders for blame, simply put, no-one in the wonderful mix should be short-changed, least of all the end consumer.

Under the ever-expanding Vinitaly Umbrella, all that is required is to create the appropriate environments, where each different attendees needs and wishes can be specifically met. Indeed, for those whose wish it is to simply taste the new released creations of their winemaking heroes, they should be actively encouraged to visit.

We imagine plenty of TOP stuff is already in the pipeline for 2017.

We look forward to it. Indeed our hope for everyone, and in particular for winemakers and consumers, is that organisers might consider a new on-site bespoke ‘Made-to-Measure Public Tasting Arena’ with, dare we say it, some ‘POP-UP’ bottle and merchandise stores for those wishing to buy or order for home delivery. Unless for some reason the law precludes it, why not create this opportunity?

Consumers, as infact ‘we all are’, are the final link in the beautiful Supply Chain.
We ‘ALL’ need a little ‘TLC and Guidance’ from time to time, right? And hey, in such an imagined 21st Verona Fiere Arena, where better for organising consumer oriented ‘meet & greet’ sessions, label signings, hand shakes and photo ops with Local and International wine-making gurus. It would give everyone a chance to express themselves in the environment that best serves their needs.

We say build it and they will come :)

For in doing so, there’s no doubt the winemakers, market movers and shakers will have the much wanted and deserved B2B space in which they need to grow and thrive.

Every which way we look we see WIN WINS for VINITALY!!

Best of luck Stevie, Ian & VINITALY for 2017… may the ‘flysch’ be with you!

From our experience, VINITALY Remote Carparking facilities deserve a 5 Star Award. Serviced by shuttle buses that worked like clockwork!! It couldn’t have been easier or more comfortable to attend #VINITALY2016. Funny though, how some fellow media commentators continue to harp on about Verona’s traffic issues.

Come on people, let’s not criticize what we don’t understand. As the great troubador himself urges us, we gotta start swimmin’ or we’ll sink like a stone…for the times they are a-changin’! Vintage ’64…#PUREGENIUS
