TOTAL VINEYARD SIZE
Today there are 17,000 hectares. To put this in perspective, it was closer to 50,000 ha before the destructive phylloxera laid waste to the regions vineyards.
Dedicated to Quality:
11,500 hectares are dedicatd to DO production. No doubting this regions quality. The majority comes from Tempranillo (37%) with Garnacha taking 2nd place with 25% of the total planted vineyard.

5% – some white Spanish varieties are grown but principally international varieties like Chardonnay.

With Crianza, Reserva & Gran Reserva Reds all available, no shortage of DOP quality.
As always, we like to list those grapes which we understand are available as mono-varietals or which are locally important blenders. Naturally, as we make further discovery, we’ll update these lists.
GARNACHA TINTA
There’s a lot in its favour, no doubt. Yet it seems the Jury might be about to be called out on whether this is infact the native home of Garnacha. In the meantime, let’s run with it.
Tempranillo
It’s a close call with RIOJA about Native bragging rights. Go with whichever you feel comfortable with, which could of course be both :)
